He is professor of Literature, Communications and Cultural Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a specialist in Renaissance, Spanish and Latin American Baroque, Latin American film, Marxist literary and cultural theory, US Latino literature, subaltern studies. His research experience and fields are Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. He has taught as visiting professor at the Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos Romulo Gallegos (Venezuela), the University of Minnesota, the University of California San Diego, Stanford University, the University of Washington and the Universidad Andina Simon Bolivar. He is a founder member and coordinator of the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group.
