He travels to Prato, in Italy, where the Museo Pecci hosts a retrospective exhibition of his work. Also attends the opening of his solo exhibition at the Galleria Christian Stein in Milan. He is awarded the Gold Medal by the Universidade de Porto. The Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover exhibits an extensive selection of his works produced between 1981 and 1997 and presented by Carl Haenlein; the show is subsequently presented in Krems, Austria. The Fundació Antoni Tàpies opens the exhibition Tàpies. El tatuatge i el cos, a wide-ranging show of the artist’s works on paper and cardboard covering more than fifty years. New retrospective exhibition in Locarno (Casa Rusca, Pinacoteca Comunale). He is invested doctor honoris causa by the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts. The installation Rinzen, which won the Leone d’Oro when it was presented at the Biennale di Venezia in 1993, is acquired by the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) for its permanent collection. He produces seven etchings for the book ¿Tú?, a collaboration with Antonio Gamoneda. He travels to Madrid for the opening of his exhibition at the Galería Antonio Machón of thirty drawings from the series Mira la mà. He publishes L’art i els seus llocs, a volume of his own texts and his selection of reproductions of works of art from different times and cultures. In Madrid for the opening of his retrospective exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, curated by Manuel J. Borja-Villel, which subsequently travels to Haus der Kunst in Munich. The Muzeum Narodowe in Cracow hosts the exhibition Tàpies. Certeses sentides. Both the Pace Wildenstein Gallery in New York and the Galerie Lelong in Paris present selections of his most recent work. He takes part in the exhibition Encounters. New Art from Old at the National Gallery in London, together with Balthus, Louise Bourgeois, Richard Hamilton, Jasper Johns, Bill Viola and Jeff Wall, among others.
